Window S mode prevents users from installing third-party apps. This restriction means your chances of installing malware on your computer reduce significantly. So, if you are a businessperson who routinely handles documents containing company secrets, you may use your personal computer in S mode. Windows 10 pro is very far from needed, at all, on high end or gaming machines.

Believe it or not, Microsoft serves up 12 versions of its Windows 10 operating system. For the mainstream market, you’ll find desktops and laptops packing Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 in S mode. Microsoft expects Windows 10 S will be available on normal consumer PCs.
Where to Find Recently Purchased Apps on Windows 10 in S Mode
I thought i would have a check and found the account there, I use the tablet so little, I forgot i made an account, so I took the account off and no access to the store. Also found out last night that what was said above about not being able to access the store on Android without an account is correct. I forgot my tablet have got an account, but it is separate to my phone and there is no info on it at all. IPhones do not work without an apple account and they require a credit card to setup so they're a pain. Android will work without an account, so will a MAc, i do not not know if a Iphone will or not. But I doubt windows 10S will work without an MS account.

They're just trying to get people using the Microsoft Store, and they want users to realize all these gains they've been working on, which are most evident when you still to UWP apps. Lastly, of course, they're trying to make Edge the only option... Tbh, if VisualStudio has a UWP version, I don't see the need of a win32 version. MS def has some responsibility but so do users and the HW provider they choose. No. actually Windows 10 Home is waste of space the average person does not install Win32 applications constantly. The S mode prevents users from installing random malware and adware from the internet along with tool bars.

Thankfully, full versions of Microsoft Office 365 applications—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote—are coming to the Windows Store soon. They’re packaged using Microsoft’s Project Centennial, which allows traditional Windows desktop applications to be run in a secure container and placed in the Windows Store. The application’s developer just has to package the application and submit it to the Store. Hopefully, Windows 10 S will give more desktop application developers the push to do so. Microsoft Windows 10 S is a version of the Windows 10 operating system for those in education.
It has virtually everything offered by Windows Home, plus additional security and management services. This version of Windows 10 is typically purchased in bulk by companies or schools, though you can configure desktops and laptops to include it versus using Home. Windows 10 Home includes all of the features that are likely important to the general user. You’ll find support for voice commands, pen sketches, touch displays, Windows Hello login, and more. Windows 10 Home also includes integral device encryption that’s turned on by default, but don’t confuse that with the much more powerful BitLocker encryption service .
Windows 10 in S mode: Pros and cons
Unless you can switch back and forth at will from Windows to Windows S, it's not a mode of Windows. The fact that you can't switch back and forth, the fact that you need to upgrade to get full Windows means that this is a version of Windows, not a mode. It may be written or compiled differently now and they may call it something different now but none of that changes the fact that this is still a version of Windows.

In 2018, Microsoft rebranded "Windows 10 S" to "S mode" due to consumer confusion. S mode is available on devices running either Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro. Some operations and tasks don’t require painstaking attention to detail. Unfortunately, processing payroll isn’t one of them. With sensitive salary and wage information, bank and direct deposit accounts, social security numbers, and other personal information in play, the stakes are high. When preparing a payroll run or supporting payroll operations, it’s important to follow a ...

Aside from the obvious features, like being forced into using Microsoft apps and services, there’s a way to quickly check if your PC is in S Mode. First, head to the Settings, System and then About. If you cast your eyes down to the section on Windows specifications, it should tell you which edition you’re running. The big catch with Windows 10 in S Mode is that it's designed to only run verified apps from the Windows Store. You will not be able to download apps online and install them; this version is effectively sandboxed. This doesn't change with Windows 11 in S Mode.

Of course, Chromebooks can now run Android apps, so they’re getting more powerful too. However, Microsoft will allowanyone who uses “assistive technologies” to upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro for free. Assistive technology tools like screen readers are generally only available as desktop applications and aren’t in the Windows Store, so it makes sense.
This will also protect those PCs from malware. Video games are available on a computer running Microsoft's Windows 10 S or Windows 10 in S mode. However, just like any other apps, the only titles available are ones Microsoft authorized in its app store. Windows 10 S Mode has some disadvantages that might make you want to remove it. You will only be able to use the Edge browser and Bing as your search engine.
Some people are not even trying edge, apart to download the browser they want to download, reminds me of internet Exploder. Edge is a total junk and the stat counter charts prove it! Whatr student owning an android or an iphone would ever use that pathetic Edge, when in Chrome they have their data synced on?? Oh I've forgot about Edge on Android and IOS..who the hell is using that?? Download counts in the app store tell nothing, so don't come up with those.
Check out our top picks for 2022 and read our in-depth analysis. If you see the words “in S mode” to the right of the Edition entry, you’re using an S Mode PC. If you don’t, you’re not using S Mode. Even if you purchase a PC in S Mode, you can leave S Mode for free. It doesn’t cost anything, but it is a one-time decision—once you’ve taken the PC out of S Mode, you can never put it back into S Mode. Windows 10 in S Mode can’t use command-line shells like PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Bash, either. Various other developer tools are also off limits.
Let's say all consumers will in fact get Windows 10 Home with S Mode on their new computers. Those that weren't going to install any Win32 programs to begin with will not notice any difference or limitation. Those that do attempt to install Win32 (Chrome, etc.) will get a popup about the S Mode restriction, select disable it, and then continue installing the program they wanted. I just don't see how this implementation will encourage users to change their behavior or embrace S mode in any way. Despite some of these user limitations, most users will not feel too restricted, as there are a wide variety and large number of apps available through Microsoft Store. Running Windows 10 in S mode is more secure for several reasons.
Should I switch out of S mode?
There aren't any hardware restrictions on Windows 10 S either, as it's designed to run across a full range of devices. Those things include things like faster log-in, better battery life and easy management across large numbers of devices. When it was originally launched, Microsoft demonstrated that a new user logging onto Windows 10 S could get into the PC faster than a standard Windows 10 Pro PC. S mode gives you a similar experience to what a Chromebook gives.

Although Home and Pro have the same root features, the added items provided in Pro aren’t necessary for the average at-home user. For example, there’s the powerful and configurable BitLocker Encryption and Windows Information Protection, which helps with advanced access control. Microsoft is positioning Windows 10 S as a streamlined version of Windows 10 for schools.
